Claire Terry
Claire Terry, produces bold and colourful mixed media work on wooden board. She applies cut pieces she has salvaged then ‘re-appropriated’ such as bold patterned china, coloured glass, buttons (lots of those!), costume jewellery and the odd found thing! Claire studied art & design on leaving school with the intention of becoming a graphic designer and album cover artist after her hero Roger Dean. He career took an unexpected turn when she was accepted as an Aircraft Technician in the RAF. She later gain a Mechanical Engineering Honours degree and became a Process Engineer within motorsport.
“For me, art and engineering have gone hand-in-hand, they both require practical problem solving and tactile, dexterous skills. As such, my influences are the early 20th Century modernism art that utilises block colour, almost abstract forms, often depicting movement and industrial landscapes.
Born in North London, Claire and her family now live in Oxfordshire, “I owe my ‘free form’ technique and inspiration to a wonderful and spiritual tutor, Emma Cavell. I am also extremely fortunate to be receiving training from the Mosaic Art School in Ravenna in Italy, a UNESCO world heritage site for mosaics. I am learning the ancient Byzantine skills of mosaic cutting with a hammer and hardie, and double reverse application techniques.
